Firstly, thank you for taking the time to consider Wensum for your child. Choosing a school can be a daunting process with lots of information and perspectives to consider. The first step is to call the school office and arrange a visit to come and see us. We’ll show you around, introduce you to the children and staff, and then answer any questions you may have.

Admissions to Wensum Junior School are co-ordinated by the local authority and the governing body must use the published admission rules to priortise applications.

Wensum Junior is an own admission authority school and therefore there is a requirement under paragraph 2.17 of the School Admissions Code to make clear in our admission arrangements the process for requesting admission out of the normal age range.
We will consider all requests to place children outside of their normal age group including summer born and premature children in line with the requirements of paragraph 2.17 to 2.17B of the School Admissions Code.
Our pupil admission number (PAN) is 68.
Admission Criteria
Admissions
Oversubscription rules for pupils transferring to community and voluntary controlled junior schools (Year 3) for children in their last year at an Infant or First school.
If there are more applications for places than there are places available, we will give preference to children living nearest to the school, according to the following rules in this order of priority:
- Children with a statement of special educational needs naming that school
- Children in public care who are due to transfer
- Children who are due to transfer, living in the area served by the school who have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of their admission
- Children who are due to transfer, living in the area served by the school who have no brother or sister connection with the school
- Children who are due to start school who have been allocated a permanent place at a Specialist Resource Base attached to the school. (Places allocated by Norfolk County Council’s Placement panel).
- Children who are due to transfer, living outside the area served by the school who have a brother or sister attending the school at the time of their admission
- Children who are due to transfer, living outside the area served by the school and attend a feeder school at the opening date of the admission round.
- Children who are due to transfer, living outside the area served by the school who have no brother or sister or feeder school connection with the school.
- Children attending primary schools with a brother or sister at the junior school
- Children attending primary schools with no brother or sister at the junior school.
If all children within any of the above rules cannot be offered a place, the highest priority will be given to children living nearest to the school within that rule. To determine who lives nearest, distance will be measured on a straight line “crow fly” basis, using Ordnance Survey data. The address will be measured from the post office address point on the property.
In the unlikely event that distance does not separate the final two or more pupils seeking the last remaining place, a random allocation will be used to determine who is offered the final place.
Wensum Junior School follows the Norfolk County Council admissions process so all requests for school places need to go through admissions. All information regarding admissions and their processes can be found at the Norfolk County Council Admissions website. Applications for Year 2 parents for a place at Junior School open in November and close in January.
Year 3
The admission round for admission to Year 3 at Junior schools in September 2025 opened on 6th November 2024. The closing date for applications is 15th January 2025.

Transfer to Secondary School
The transfer to secondary school application process is now closed for 2025 admission.
If your child is in their last year at a primary or junior school, you must apply for a place in Year 7 at a secondary school.

Moving schools during the school year
Moving to a different school at any time other than the usual admission to Reception class, transfer to junior school or transfer to secondary school, is known as an ‘in-year transfer’.
This could be a move between Norfolk schools, or a move to a Norfolk school from a school in a different area. You will need to make an online application to apply for a new school place, or complete and return an application form.
Under no circumstances should you withdraw your child from their current school before an alternative school has been allocated.
You can only make one application for a school place in a school year, unless there is a material change in circumstances.
